Marks of Bad Preaching

I have had the privilege of hearing hundreds of men preach through the years. Most have been a great blessing to me. I have made some great spiritual decisions by hearing men of God preach the Word of God to me. Through the years I have also heard some sermons that helped me very little. Some did absolutely nothing for me. Here is a list of common attributes of bad preaching.

1. Powerless Preaching

"Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts." (Zech 4:6). There is a difference between a man that preaches about something he's heard and a man that preaches about something he's lived. One man preached like he knew the sermon, the other preached like he knew the Shepherd. They said that Jonathan Edwards lived in eternity 6 days a week, and on the 7th day he came down and told everyone what he saw. I want to preach like that. 

2. Passionless Preaching 

Jeremiah said that God put a FIRE in his bones, but some men preach as if they have FROST in their bones. Instead of burning passion they have bland passiveness. People will always go where they find passion. Sport stadiums are always full because they are passionate about their team. Churches are empty because many of them have no passion behind the pulpit. If you catch fire for God, then people will come watch you burn.

Bible truth is exciting! Preach like it!

3. No/Little Bible

Not many people can gather a crowd every week to have their opinions heard, but several can gather a crowd to hear the bible. God has called you to "preach the word", not share your opinions. I have heard men speak for 30 mins before ever opening the bible. I actually heard one man preach for 40 mins and NEVER once opened a bible. I wasn't helped.

4. Scattered Delivery

Preach on a subject and stick with that subject. I heard a man one time that started preaching on God's holiness, then preached on music, then how much he liked fried chicken, then what time him kids go to bed at night, then about the KJV bible, then he mentioned his early morning walks, then he mentioned the amount of abortions in America. It was bizarre and, needless to say, I wasn't helped. Rabbit trails are fine AS LONG AS YOU GET A RABBIT!

5. No Illustrations

Jesus used illustrations. Illustrations are windows that help me to more clearly see and understand a bible truth. Use them often and use them again. Topics like the grace of God can be hard to understand without an illustration. The love of God can be greatly understood with an illustration. Illustrations are like a handle by which I can grasp a bible truth. Please use them.

6. No Humor

Some men just aren't funny, and that's ok, but humor can be a great tool. Someone once said, "If you are going to tell people the truth, you'd better make them laugh or they'll kill you." Humor is a skill that can be used to keep the attention of the average listener. Work at it.

7. Too Long

The mind can only absorb what the seat can endure. A sermon does not have to be eternal to be effective. There is a fine line between a long sermon and a hostage situation. I personally try to stay under 40 mins max.

8. No Application

The worst sermons are those that give a load of religious information with no application. I'm glad that you know the sequence of the feasts and the blood moons, but what does that mean to me? Dr Runion shared with me a valuable lesson about preaching. He said that when he was pastoring, he was going very deep into prophecy for months. During one sermon, he looked up and saw farmers, housewives, and children all staring at him with a blank stare. It dawned on him that they were literally getting NOTHING out of this sermon series because they didn't know how it applied to their day to day life.

Give me something that I can use.

9. No Verdict

A sermon should cause me to make a decision. It is a call to action. The sermon should present a bible truth, apply it to my life, and then give me the choice to obey it or disobey it. It should not be an entertainment exhibition. There should be information, but it should cause me to obey what I hear.

10. No Humility

I have heard some men use their sermon to promote themselves, and I have heard some men use their sermon to promote Christ. A sermon that points you to the preacher won't help you spiritually. We need to see Jesus in every sermon.

There is a difference between a man that is doing a great work for God, and a man that thinks he's great because of the work he's doing for God.

Be down on yourself and up on Jesus!

Disqualified Preachers

 

Unfortunately, there are some men in the Baptist world who have adopted a philosophy of ministry where they believe that ministry men who have sinned greatly, can and should be restored back into ministry. This philosophy is sin, heresy, and is unbiblical. Men can disqualify themselves from ministry, and they should never stand in a pulpit again. Here are some texts that they use to justify their philosophy, and why they are wrong:

1. "The Gifts and Calling of God are Without Repentance." (Romans 11:29) This verse is so laughable out of context that it proves these men to be biblically ignorant. That verse is about the national election of the nation of Israel, not a man who cheated on his wife, and wants to keep his church...and his paycheck.

2. "Ye Which Are Spiritual, Restore Such An One" (Galatians 6:1) This verse speaks about restoring a brother in Christ back to fellowship because he was overtaken in a "fault", not a felony. I have seen this verse used to justify the restoration of a pedophile back into ministry. A pedo belongs in a prison cell, not a pulpit. Anyone who would use this verse to justify putting a perv back in a pulpit doesn't know God or his Bible.

3. "David Sinned With Bathsheba" (2 Samuel 11) David was an Old Testament King of Israel, not a New Testament Bishop. He ran a nation, not a church. There were many heathen men who were kings of Israel, but the church is to be ruled by a blameless, sober, holy, and temperate man. (1 Timothy 3, Titus 1). If a man commits adultery, he is disqualified from the New Testament office of a bishop.

I hate that this even needs to be said, but there are men who have adopted a pragmatic view of ministry where they think "more men preaching = more ministry being done = more people being saved", when that is not the case. I'm afraid they have let loose upon the church a mob of unqualified men who have done much more harm than they have done good. People have been hurt. Lives have been destroyed. Churches have been soured. The testimony of Christ has been damaged by these men.

It's time for these men to sit down forever. We can restore you back to fellowship, but never back to leadership. You are disqualified. Even the Baptist ones in Florida.

The Winds are Blowing! Get Ready! - Spencer Smith

 

Years ago, an up and coming "Independent Baptist" was doing a livestream about his upcoming conference called "Idea Day". He wanted to know what topics he could cover during the conference to help your church. There were probably 30 people in the live chat. Not a big deal.

A few guys asked some basic questions about church growth, and I asked "what can I do to help keep emergent church principles out of my church". He skipped my question several times. He even said at the end, "if there are no more questions, then we are going to go". I asked my question three times again and again. He paused, squinted at the screen, and said "Well, since there are no more questions, I guess we will go. See you all at the conference." It was obvious that he was ignoring my question.

Today that guy is a left wing evangelical. He used to preach in chapel in Independent Baptist Bible colleges in California, but now they won't even touch him. He even wrote an entire blog post about his disdain for Ernest Pickering. Yikes.


The winds of this stuff are blowing, and you would be a fool to ignore the fact that these things are coming to a pew near you soon. Pastors need to be aware and do the work of an evangelist, and be "vigilant" to prepare yourself and your people for the day that this comes into your church. If not, then you absolutely could lose your entire youth department to these issues. Don't fall asleep on this. It's coming. The music is just the start...

Over 50% of NYFD Say They Do Not Trust Vaccine And Will Not Take It!!!

According to a private, internal survey, 55% of NYFD Firemen said they will not take the shot when it comes out. Also, NYFD says that they WILL NOT require firemen and EMS workers to take the vaccine.

It seems that there is some serious pushback to this upcoming vaccine! I have no doubt that there should be some questioning due to the speed in which it was brought to market, the fact that the vaccine company has legal immunity if you have and adverse reaction to it, and the lack of mass testing of it's effectiveness.

The New York Post article says, "More than half of New York City firefighters say they won’t be vaccinated for COVID-19 when the potentially life-saving shot becomes available to first responders in a matter of weeks, according to a new internal survey. About 55 percent of 2,053 smoke-eaters polled in the last three days by their union, the Uniformed Firefighters Association, answered “No” when asked, “Will you get the COVID-19 Vaccine from Pfizer when the Department makes it available?” UFA President Andy Ansbro told The Post. The responses account for about 25 percent of the UFA’s 8,200 active members."

Personally, I thought that I would be among the few that were going to oppose this, but I'm grateful that I am not. 

Another surprising move is that the FDNY has announced that they will NOT require emergency workers to take the vaccine. This is very surprising news coming from New York. 

Maybe there could be a massive pushback on this new vaccine. Maybe we won't have to take it after all. Maybe there is life after Covid. Maybe we haven't completely bowed to the New World Order yet...

Harry Emerson Fosdick and The Worldly Independent Baptist's Calls For "Unity"

Harry Emerson Fosdick preached a controversial message in 1922 called, "Shall the Fundamentalists Win?" In this sermon, he appealed to the Presbyterian denomination that we should set aside our doctrinal differences for the sake of world evangelism. The problem was that those "doctrinal differences" were things like the virgin birth of Christ, the second coming of Christ, and the inspiration of Scripture. Today, men that call themselves "Independent Baptists" are making eerily similar appeals...

Although the names and issues are different, the same cycle is happening again. There is another generation of Liberal Baptist Preachers that are saying that we need to set aside our differences on Contemporary Christian Rock/Rap Worship, English Bible Versions, and Ecclesiastical Separation to reach this world for Christ.

What many have failed to see is that these "appeals" are nothing more than veiled attacks on the character of the Holy Spirit (Contemporary Christian Rock/Rap Worship), the doctrine of the Preservation of Scripture (KJV a secondary issue), and the Doctrinal Purity of the Local Church (Ecclesiastical Separation).

I cannot judge the motives of those making these appeals, but I am fully capable of discerning the direction that this will take churches. This is nothing more than a repetition of the same mistakes that other denominations have made in the past, and it cost them everything. Many that went this direction ended up losing their children and grandchildren to theological liberalism and modernism which made them infidels.

I have been teaching my children the importance of standing for what is right. I have made them memorize this saying, "I will stand for what's right, even if I have to stand alone." I will stand as a Fundamental Baptist, KJV only, Ecclesiastically Separate from Heretics, and what is commonly referred to as "Traditional" worship...even if I have to stand alone.

As a Missionary, I have a passion to see this world come to Christ, but I am not willing to "redefine" Christ by compromising Bible doctrine. These appeals for unity at the expense of truth are folly.

Romans 1 speaks of those who "changed the truth of God into a lie." I fear that there are many behind pulpits that are doing that very thing. I will just tell the truth, and let God do the rest.

I desire unity and I desire world evangelism, but not at the expense of truth. If I have to believe something about God that I know not to be true to fellowship with you, then I simply cannot. I don't have a bad spirit, and I have no ill will, but I must be true to what I know to be true. So help me God...

Pee-Wee Herman Christianity!

The culture of today has tried to re-define what a man should be, and has even intimidated the church to re-think manliness.

Men of previous generations were powerful, strong, and tough. Men of today are passive, soft, and timid. Men of previous generations took a stand, men of today only take a stand when they are standing against a man that takes a stand. The greatest sin of today is to simply be a man of conviction.

John the Baptist had his head chopped off for opposing the immorality of a politician. (Matt 14) Paul stood in a jail cell and rebuked the local magistrates for his unlawful imprisonment. (Acts 16) Jesus rebuked the religious and political leaders of his day by calling them serpents, vipers, and even a fox. (Matt 23)

The mindset of today is that a Christian man should be some jovial, passive creature that goes with the flow and never rocks the boat. This idea of manliness has more in common with Pee-Wee Herman than Jesus Christ.

Christian men should not be rude and hostile, but we should be willing to stand with compassion where God stands on the issues of our day. When one stands FOR God, he soon finds himself standing WITH God...and that puts him in good company. God + One = The Majority.

Find out where God stands, and stand with Him. God help us to reject this effeminate counterfeit and have a revival of true, biblical manliness!

Disposition Over Position

When people can't argue with WHAT you are saying, they will begin to argue about HOW you said it. Far too many are concerned more about DISPOSITION than POSITION. They don't care what you say, as long as you say it in a charming, and acceptable way. The danger in valuing DISPOSITION over POSITION is that people will accept heresy because they like how it was said. Objectivity requires that we look beyond their demeanor see what they actually believe. Sometimes the most powerful poisons come in the prettiest packages.

"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works."

- 2 Corinthians 11:14-15

The problem with arguing DISPOSITION over POSITION is that there is nobody on the planet who has that one perfect, "catchall" disposition that everybody is going to accept. There will always be some inclination, quirk, sentiment, or even accent that will violate the prejudices of the listeners. There will always be someone who says the preacher is too loud, too quiet, too aggressive, too weak, too wordy, too simplistic, too short, too long, too funny, or not funny enough. It is because of these issues, those who would argue disposition over position have no valid argument. Therefore, every preacher should strive to have a Christlike disposition, but at the same time realize that no matter what you do, there is going to be someone who will reject your position and blame it on your disposition.

God uses all types of dispositions to articulate the correct theological position.

Conclusion:

Don't hesitate to just be yourself. God uses all types of preachers.

The Three Worst Sermon Types:

Preaching is a very important part of the ministry. It should never be undermined or discounted. The man that would mount the sacred desk should realize that he has a serious responsibility before God to feed his flock. Sermons should be well prepared, prayed over, and delivered clearly if they are to be of any help.

God uses all types of personalities. He uses the serious, the jokester, the cryer, the straight shooter, and the intelectual all the same. There are many effective ways to communicate Bible truth to a congregation, and there are many ineffective way to communicate a Bible truth to a crowd.

Let me give you just a few of the worst sermon types:

1. All Shout - No Substance

The man that would mount the pulpit with fire in his belly should be able to articulate what he is so excited about. If a man is excited about a truth, then he should be able to explain that truth. There are secular speakers that are able to work a crowd into an emotional upheaval with sad stories, emotional displays, and a dynamic delivery. I fear that some in the ministry know how to do the same thing. The command to "preach the word" still stands today. Away with rhetoric, cliches, one liners, and generic sayings. Give me something from the Words of God!

2. All Information - No Application

There are many covenants, laws, prophecies, and traditions in the Bible. These things can be very detailed and complicated. Some men have taken it upon themselves to learn the intricate details of these concepts, and preach them to their congregations.

The difficulty comes with the application of these concepts to the average listener. Many people in the pews are not helped by an exposition of the second toe on the left foot of the beast in Daniel 2. If a preacher would go into these concepts, he must make sure that there is some application that the listener can apply to their life. If not, then you are just boring them.

3. No Shout - No Substance

We have all heard the hopelessly boring man preach with substance. We endured his lack of personality to get the Bible message he was giving us. Then there is the hopelessly boring man that preaches without substance. Not only is he missing a personality, he is missing a message.

These men tax people's patience, weary teenager's souls, and make children think that church is boring. Nothing is worse than going to church without feeling like you have gone to church. Imagine being invited over to someone's house for a meal, only to find that there is nothing to eat when you get there. The man that has no substance does the same thing spiritually to his listeners.

Conclusion: 

Every sermon should have three basic elements: Substance, Shout, and Application. All effective communication has these elements, and sermons should too.

Man is in sin, no hope within

If they only knew the gift of God.

Violence, death, until their last breath, 

If they only knew the gift of God.

Liquor, vice, no hope of Paradise,

If they only knew the gift of God.

Drugs, pain, nothing to gain, 

If they only knew the gift of God.

Hurt, snares, and nobody cares, 

If they only knew the gift of God.

Depression and dope, having no hope, 

If they only knew the gift of God.

There's a church, a steeple, filled with God's people, 

they know of the gift of God!

But their backslid and cold, the story's gotten old, 

they lost the wonder of the gift of God.

The Glorification of the Un-Educated Preacher

When I was first saved, I heard several men preach that often referenced the fact that they had little education. I was not troubled at all that they did not attend prestigious universities or had vast academic accomplishments. The thing that intrigued me about these men was not their LACK OF EDUCATION, but the fact that they GLORIED IN THEIR LACK OF EDUCATION.

I actually heard one man jokingly say "I'm ignorant and I plan on getting ignorant-er." The congregation laughed and so did I. I have also heard many men say that "you can have so many degrees on the wall that they call you a thermometer and still be frozen!" I soon discovered that some churches felt it was shameful for a preacher to be educated. I heard one man explain that there were only two types of preachers: educated and God called.

As I began to grow in the Lord, and read my bible, I began to notice several instances where learning was encouraged, ESPECIALLY FOR THE NEW TESTAMENT PREACHER.

"Till I come, give attendance to READING, to exhortation, to doctrine." - 1 Timothy 4:13

"A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;" - 1 Timothy 3:2

The word "apt" simple means "qualified" or "able". If a preacher is not able to teach, then he is not going to be effective in ministry. The only way a man can be apt to teach is if he has LEARNED something. If a preacher is not informed enough about doctrine and contemporary theological issues, then how can he influence a generation to avoid apostasy and error? 

Certainly there have been many preachers that were mightlity used of God that had little to no education, but these men are often the exception and not the rule.

Just to clarify my thoughts, let me explain myself further:

What I am NOT saying:

1. That the power of the Holy Spirit is not vital for effective ministry. 

Nothing will be done in this church age without the power of the Holy Spirit. Nothing.

2. That every preacher must be educated to be used by God. 

Some men never had the opportunity to be educated through a bible college and they are in no way at a disadvantage.


What I AM saying:

The New Testament preacher has a responsibility to be knowledgeable in certain areas if he desires to be effective. Some men have placed a stigma upon education and reading that is troubling. To glory in a lack of education, knowledge, or understanding is neither virtuous, admirable, or biblical.

Let me remind you that several of our fundamental forefathers were educated and highly intelligent men. Lester Roloff, Harold Sightler, Jack Hyles, and John R. Rice were all educated.

Let me give you a few points to consider:

1. Preachers Should Be Educated In Word And Doctrine.

If a man wants to go into the medical field today, it is required that he go through at least 8 years of college, then 3-7 years of residency before he is eligible for medical licensing. The medical field makes sure that a prospective doctor demonstrates a thorough understanding of medicine before he is approved for private practice.

To give a medical license to a man that has only a nominal understanding of medicine is dangerous and criminal. To give a pulpit to a man that wilfully refuses to learn bible doctrine is even more dangerous and criminal. As a medical doctor takes upon himself the sacred responsibility of his patient's health, so a preacher takes upon himself the sacred responsibility of his people's souls. Neither responsibility should be taken up by men that are willfully ignorant of their field.

2. Preachers Should Be Informed About Modern Issues.

These last days will be marked by a rise of false teachers and false doctrines. It is imperative that preachers of the last days keep themselves informed. There is no virtue in ignorance about modern issues of our day.

Churches today are being infiltrated by people like Rick Warren, Benny Hinn, TD Jakes, Joyce Myers, Carl Lentz, Bill Johnson, Mark Driscoll, and others. (If you read this list and were unfamiliar with these names, then you need to bring yourself up to speed).

There are also many young Independent Baptist Pastors today that are going emergent, and I fear many of them were trained by men who were willfully ignorant of modern issues.

There are also many false teachers online that are claiming to be Independent Fundamental Baptists. Steven Anderson is one that has caught many preachers of our day off guard. Many men, myself included, had to dust off some old books and brush up on some unfamiliar areas of theology to combat his heresy.

Just as a Doctor has to keep himself informed about new diseases and medical developments, a preacher should keep himself informed about the new heresies that develop in our world.

3. Preachers Should Read Other Preachers. 

Spurgeon's famous quote: "He who will not use the thoughts of other men’s brains, proves that he has no brains of his own." could not be more needed than it is today. Preachers should read preachers. 

In 2 Timothy 4:13, Paul asked for someone to bring him a cloak (body), parchments (spirit), and books (soul). I am fairly certain that those books were not bible commentaries, but this shows that even the great Apostle read other men's works. He borrowed other men's brains.

Spurgeon said about this passage, "He is inspired, yet he wants books. He has been preaching at least thirty years, yet he wants books. He’s seen the Lord, yet he wants books. He’s had a wider experience than most men, yet he wants books. He’s been caught up to heaven and has heard things that are unlawful to utter, yet he wants books. He’s written a major part of the New Testament, yet he wants books."

Sadly, many men stopped reading when they got out of school.

4. Preachers Should Be Writers. 

He who will be silent will be forgotten.

Today we know names like John Phillips, J. Sidlow Baxter, Dwight Pentecost, Pink, Ironside, Larkin, and Rice, not because of their sermons, but because they WROTE A BOOK!

Through my years of travelling I have been able to meet some incredible men of God. I personally believe that some of the greatest men of God that have ever lived are living right now. I sit in awe at the wisdom that God has given these men, and I have encouraged many of them to write. Sadly, most of them refuse by saying, "nobody would read my book", or "I don't want to be criticized", or "I don't have time for that". I'm always sad to hear these responses because I know that they could be a great help to so many, but they just don't see it.

It common that I hear a discussion in Fundamental Baptist conferences about young preachers going emergent, liberal, and modernistic. There is much lamenting and anger about their change in direction, but little discussion about WHY. Could it be that many young preachers are going from a Fundamental position to an Evangelical position because the vast majority of people writing books on theology and ministry are Evangelicals? Where are the Fundamentalist writers?

Many Christians today are familiar with the name A.W Tozer. Do you know that A.W. Tozer is still ministering to God's people today even though he is in Heaven? His sermons are still reaping spiritual dividends and influencing generations of young preachers BECAUSE HE WROTE BOOKS. A book can be a great legacy for your family, and another avenue that can bring rewards at the judgement seat long after you have passed on.


Write a book preacher. He who will be silent will be forgotten.

Why Some Weep for Missions....and Others Don't....

When I was a sophomore in high school, I joined the football team. I would practice with the team, but because I was much smaller than almost everyone else, I did not play on Friday night. 

I remember dressing for the games and watching from the sidelines. I saw the starters get hit, bleed, and fight the entire season. When they won they shouted, when they lost they wept. 

I remember our team losing a very close game that should have been an easy victory. I sat on the bus with the starting lineup and they we all weeping, but I wasn't. They were emotional wrecks, but I was telling jokes with another backup player.

It was then that I noticed something about myself: I wasn't as concerned with the loss as the starters because I didn't have anything invested in this game. Every person on that bus that had a dirty uniform was crying. Every person with a clean uniform was laughing. 

The same may be true today about foreign missions in the local church. Those who are willing to put themselves on the field and invest themselves in this cause may have a greater passion than those who don't. 

I'm writing this having come fresh off the mission field and having seen over 4,000 saved in 2 weeks. I have skin in this game. I've sacrificed time, money, some health, and much comfort to see and do what I've done. My burden for Kenya and Uganda is greater than it's ever been! 

I'm afraid that many Christians have a burden for missions, but not a significant one. Missions is an afterthought because most people in the pews have little to nothing invested in reaching a foreign people with the gospel. Many see the slide presentations, hear the missionaries talk of their fields, but they personally have little/nothing invested in the mission fields of the world! 

I want to admonish every Christian that would read this: get off the sidelines and get in this game! Quit watching the missionaries do missions and come do some missions yourself! 

Every American Christian should leave America at least once in their life! Coming to the mission field will enlarge your burden for people because it makes it personal. No longer are these just pictures on a screen or a prayer letter, these are REAL PEOPLE, WITH REAL SOULS, THAT ARE REALLY DYING AND GOING TO A REAL HELL!

Come see the work in Kenya. Come feel the need. Come see the multitudes. It will change you forever!

Has the Lord Answered the Prayer for Laborers...and We Missed It?

Recently, I have seen many people sharing a great missionary’s post about the need for laborers on the mission fields of the world. I agree 100% with what this great Missionary is saying. There is so much work to do! I doubt many people have been able to see the enormous need for missions in Africa and other parts of the world like I have; and I agree that there are so few Fundamental Baptist College Graduates that are going into missions today. 

The Lord spoke in Matthew 9:37-38, "Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”

I’m sure that many Christians have prayed this way for years, but some are seeming to imply that either the Lord isn’t answering this prayer or Christians aren’t praying enough for laborers.

So the question remains: Where are these laborers that we have been praying for? 

Could it be that the Lord is actually answering this prayer and has been for many years now? Could it be that we have asked the Lord to raise up laborers to reach the lost with the gospel, but we don’t fully see it?  Could it be that He actually has raised up an army of laborers for His harvest, but we missed it? Could it be that the Lord has answered the prayers of His people, but He did it in a way that we didn’t expect? Could it be that the Lord has answered this prayer by raising up the national pastor? 

Where did the Lord say the laborers had to be American? 

Maybe the Lord has answered an entire generation of Christian’s prayers...
